KUALA LUMPUR: Astro All Asia Networks plc, a wholly-owned unit of Measat Broadcast Network Systems Sdn Bhd, sees continued demand for pay TV and plans to offer more channels to Malaysian viewers.

Measat chief executive officer Rohana Rozhan said TV viewership was still experiencing good growth and the company would be spending about 10% more, or RM110bil, on content this year.

揕ast year, we expected about 250,000 to 300,000 new customers. We added 374,000 new customers,

Richer contents for viewers on the way, says Astro (BT)

By Jeeva Arulampalam

PAY-TV operator Astro All Asia Networks plc (Astro) (5076) will soon look to increase capacity and offer richer contents to its Malaysian customers, says chief executive officer for television operations Rohana Rozhan.

Astro plans to increase its transponder capacity, which will then allow it to provide affordable high-definition content.

"We will continue to innovate our products in terms of content as well as technology. Of our existing 2.65 million customers now, at least 500,000-700,000 are high-end urban customers who already own HDTV (high-definition television)," Rohana told Business Times yesterday after launching three new channels in Kuala Lumpur.

She said there was a lack of high-definition content in the local space, with the exception of Blu-ray services, and was keen on penetrating this space as soon as it has new capacity.
"Capacity is a function of transponder capacity so we hope to have that within this year," said Rohana, who declined to elaborate as the company is under a blackout period pending the release of its first quarter results (for the three-month period ended April 30 2009).

Astro currently uses 10 satellite transponders to broadcast over 100 channels.

In June 2007, Astro's wholly-owned unit entered into an agreement with MEASAT Satellite Systems Sdn Bhd to utilise transponder capacity on the MEASAT-3 satellite.

Under the agreement, Astro will utilise transponder capacity from 13 transponders on MEASAT-3 in five tranches over a four-year duration commencing August 2007.

Astro typically pays some US$1.8 million to US$2 million (US$1 = RM3.55) per annum for each transponder.

Meanwhile, Astro hopes to target some 300,000 existing customers within the first year of the launch of its three new channels under its Mustika pack.

The three new channels, Astro Citra, Astro Warna and B4U will be commercially available as of June 1 priced at RM12.95 per month.

Mustika aims to provide more alternative content for Astro's Malay viewers, which make up 1.5 million of its total customer base of 2.65 million.

Citra will be the Malaysian version of the HBO channel providing local and international movies. Warna is a local comedy channel while B4U showcases the latest box-office Bollywood movies and music videos.

"We will bring in international contents from countries such as Thailand, Indonesia, South Korea, Japan and in the Middle East to cater for a diverse profile of movie lovers," said Astro Entertainment Sdn Bhd executive director Zainir Aminullah.

Astro has also increased the amount spent on local content by 10 per cent, in comparison to the RM300 million spent last year. It invested some RM1 billion for overall content.

For more information on the Mustika pack, customers can tune to channel 130 for a preview of the three new channels.
